Spiritual Fitness Leads to Weight Loss
By Alison Husak
Have you heard about Christ-centered, weight-loss and healthy living program coming to Grace this fall? It is called First Place and it encompasses proven techniques with over 25 years of experience.
Emphasis is placed on putting Christ first and foremost in your life, understanding the positive effects that good nutrition and exercise have on your emotions and spirit, and utilizing the support of friends to help you maintain success and keep weight off for good.
Let me tell you a bit about my story. I didn’t really consider myself that overweight, although the pounds had slowly crept on over the years. Thinking I could do this on my own, I tried many weight loss programs like Dr. Phil, Atkins, and South Beach. They would work for a few weeks and I would lose a few pounds, but then… I would tire of the concept and the pounds would come back.
This past winter, a friend in Bible Study told me about The First Place program.
Huh, I thought, a Spiritual Weight Loss Program? But the more I thought about it, the more sense it made. We ask Christ to help us with so many parts of our lives, why not our weight loss? I was also intrigued by the concept of a plan that addressed the mental, physical, emotional and spiritual areas of our lives. I was interested and curious, so I joined the program.
I was so impressed by what I found at First Place! There were wonderful Christian men and woman with a common goal of losing weight and putting Christ first in their lives. It was a support group, Bible study and weight-loss program all rolled into one! Each week we encouraged each other as we learned sound nutritional information, studied Scripture and learned more about God’s plan for each of our lives.
Since January, I broke several old habits and gained new healthier ones. I met new Christian friends, pray with them, memorize Scripture with them and celebrate their weight loss. I stuck with it and have lost a dress size and am within 10 pounds of my weight-loss goal.
If you have tried and failed at weight loss, and a Christ-centered program interests you, please consider trying First Place this fall at Grace. We will meet on Wednesday evenings (at the same time Midweek Bible Club and Catechism meet). The nursery will also be staffed. Visit firstplace.org.
